CAREER OPPORTUNITIES FOR B.SC GRADUATES

Chemistry considered as the “mother” science offers a wide range of career opportunities in such diverse areas as teaching, research, chemical and related industries, consultancy and entrepreneurship. Persons with industrial experience can either opt for consultancy, advising others on how to set up chemical industries or can themselves enter into the venture.                   

1.Analytical chemist

Analytical chemists examine substances to determine their composition. They also look at how elements in a compound interact with one another. Their work is of paramount importance to the pharmaceutical industry, which requires information about the make-up and possible interaction of substances that might be turned into medicine. Their skills are also used in the field of environmental chemistry to detect chemical pollutants in the environment.Analytical chemists typically work in laboratories, where they operate and maintain instruments such as spectrometers and chromatographs. They perform tests and other procedures on compounds to discern their nature. A bachelor’s degree is a minimum requirement for analytical chemists, though further education at the graduate level can lead to research roles or supervisory positions  in the pharmaceutical and environmental industries.

2.Biomedical chemist

Biomedical chemists are medical scientists. They perform scientific research and apply chemical principles to study human diseases, their origins, and how to best treat them. They also create and study new pharmaceutical drugs . As a biomedical chemist, one can work in medical or even in veterinary research. Many biomedical chemistry majors opt to pursue medical school. Some choose a career in the medical industry and some pursue a career in medicinal chemistry. It is also possible to work in pathology labs or for government agencies or private companies that are involved in quality control or regulation of pharmaceuticals. Other options are teaching, research and development, forensics or becoming a physician.

3. Chemistry lab technician

Chemistry lab technicians assist chemists in their lab work. Technicians are responsible for monitoring chemical processes and testing products as part of quality assurance. Under the supervision of chemists and other team members, they perform repetitive lab activities, such as setting up lab equipment and preparing chemical solutions. They also conduct tests, interpret and analyze data, compile results, prepare reports, and present their conclusions.

4. Production or industrial chemist

Production or industrial chemists typically work in plants that manufacture products formed from chemical reactions, such as pharmaceuticals, oil, cosmetics and fertilizers. They conduct laboratory research to find effective ways to optimize production processes, improve production safety and product quality, and reduce environmental pollution. Production chemists can also find job opportunities at research and development facilities.

5.Quality control worker

Quality control workers record the results of their inspections and prepare test reports. When they find defects, inspectors notify supervisors and help to analyze and correct the production problems. In some firms, the inspection process is completely automated, with advanced vision inspection systems installed at one or several points in the production process. Inspectors in these firms monitor the equipment, review output, and do random product checks. 

6.Environmental Health and Safety professional

This type of specialist protects the well-being, health and safety of the environment and public by setting regulations in the workplace in accordance to following safety standards.  Environmental Health and Safety professionals typically work for federal, state and local government agencies and could also spend their work hours in other locations such as factories and mines. 

7. Materials Technician

Materials Technician test the behavior of materials under different conditions to help develop new products and improve existing ones.

8. Industrial scientist

Industrial scientists perform research and development work with a commercial focus in fields like agriculture, food science, environmental science, earth science, pharmaceutical science, engineering and technology. Much of an industrial scientist’s time is spent on stressful and challenging deadline-oriented projects. Industrial scientists invent and develop new products and technologies. Industrial scientists generally work collaboratively with other scientists and may work for a consulting firm, manufacturing company, biotech firm, pharmaceutical company, non-governmental organization or government agency.

9. The Lab Technologist

The Lab Technologist will perform standard operating procedures applying basic laboratory techniques, calculations, materials measurement, operation of laboratory equipment and record keeping necessary to manufacture and test Food and Feed Safety products.

10.Teacher

 A B.Ed degree is essential to apply for teaching positions in schools after completing B.Sc.course.
